Well Yes and No…
Let’s look at how Google matches your search criteria and how Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) can help …….
A user is searching for a company who builds new homes in Mornington Vic, so they type in a few words hoping to find a business that matches their criteria. We are going to use the results later of one of our own clients (name changed) who has come to us to try to achieve better rankings in a Google search.
Search engines such as Google, Bing etc come to your website where they ‘read’ your content. They then add you to their index and rank your website and if you’ve constructed your content well, will show your website to the user performing a search.
A local builder has come to us for SEO work and for this article we have changed his name and assume the company is called SuperConstruct *
The first thing we shall do is conduct a report on his website to basically see how it’s been constructed and what Google actually sees.
Below is a report showing 3 columns
A being Keyword which is the word on your website.
B being Occurrences which is how many times a word has appeared to Google.
C being Variants Encountered which is variants of the actual word which Google will recognize as that word.
We have used the top 30 results which it’s interesting to see that Construction has been used 271 times in blogs on SuperConstruct* website. The key word Email has been used 144 times, Yahoo 124 times, Google 100 times, and Homes 29 times. So if this company were hoping to rank for email design on Yahoo & Google they would probably rank really well 🙂
The actual key words of Mornington and Peninsula have ranked a poor 15 and 17 times. So Google (or other search engine) will be picking up on all the top finding results and the key words the user is typing in their search is hardly rating.
I think by now you should be able to see why someone searching for a builder located on or builds on the Mornington Peninsula won’t be finding your website.
And just a note, yes the name of the company SuperConstruct* rates at 203 occurrences but does your user know the name of your company in the first place? We are trying to attract people who don’t have a builder who works on the Peninsula and doesn’t even know of your existence yet!
So What Have We Learnt?
Basically a blog can be great for search results but the blog needs to be structured carefully. What are the keywords or phrases people are using to search and how it will it affect the content on your website? Develop a key word strategy. Google can give you some hints with related searches which are what other people are searching for. See the bottom left of your search page.
SEO is an ongoing thing, it’s not something you can set up on your website and then walk away from it thinking it will keep working forever. It needs constant monitoring with regular blogs and regular updates. SEO is long term. Think along the lines of 6-12 months to start seeing your results. It will be worth it. Also keep to a recommended 8 – 15 key words and work on them and stick with them. You will need to be consistent in reinforcing your chosen key words.
SEO is just one element in marketing your business. You also need a carefully constructed website in the first place. Google doesn’t find you because your website is pretty. Google finds you because of all the back end links .
See below of what a website looks like to Google.
